April 5, 2017 – Fiber Broadband Association’s Board of Directors Approves Formation of FOSA

The Fiber Broadband Association’s Board of Directors, at its April 5, 2017 meeting in Mississauga Ontario Canada, voted to approve the formation of a new Chapter, the Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA). The establishment of FOSA as a chapter of the Fiber Broadband Association builds on our charter of “Accelerating the Connected Future” and further recognizes our rebranding goal of expanding the scope of the Association’s representation of the all-fiber world.

FOSA is dedicated to accelerating the deployment and use of the advanced optical fiber based sensing technologies for monitoring pipelines, railways, borders, roads, and other critical infrastructure and facilities. Fiber optic sensing uses laser interrogation of fiber optic cable to remotely and instantaneously detect pipeline leaks, vehicle traffic, human traffic, digging activity, seismic activity, unsafe temperatures, loss of structural integrity, and other conditions and activities. On a constant basis, fiber optic sensing accurately pinpoints the location of events from miles away.

FOSA membership is open to organizations which manufacture, install, and provide support services related to fiber optic sensing systems and equipment. Nine companies have committed to the foundation of FOSA – OZ Optics, Ltd., OFS, OptaSense, Corning Optical Communications, Fotech Solutions, Ditch Witch, Omnisens, Prysmian Cables and Systems and Integrated Roadways. These companies will form the initial Board of Directors.

FOSA is eager to expand its membership, and we encourage any entity involved in this industry segment to join. Membership information can be obtained from Stan Fendley, Corning at fendleysg@corning.com or (202) 661-4152.
