On Trac & the FTTH Council
On Trac, Incorporated is a proud member of the national/international FTTH Council since 2003. On Trac officers have served through the years on various Council committees, as well serving as a sponsoring organization at the national FTTH Conference/Expo. We have also presided at member’s meetings and joined the council in lobbying efforts in Washington DC. For 2011, On Trac leadership is well represented through Mike Hill (CEO) serving as the Chairman for the FTTH Council Board of Directors and Joseph Jones (Executive Director) chairing the Council Planning & Marketing Committee. On Trac stands as a proven LEADER in the FTTH Industry in America with nearly a decade of daily fiber experience and over 100,000 plus in fiber-related installations (video/voice/data) in over 15 different municipalities.
WHAT IS FIBER-TO-THE-HOME?
Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) is the delivery of a communications signal over optical fiber from the operator’s switching equipment all the way to an individual home or business, thereby replacing existing copper infrastructure such as copper telephone wires and coaxial cable. Fiber to the home is a relatively new telecommunications technology and represents a fast growing, cutting edge system of delivering vastly higher bandwidth to consumers and businesses- thereby enabling more robust video, internet and voice services.
Connecting homes directly to fiber optic cable through an FTTH Network enables enormous improvements in bandwidth and data transmission speed available to consumers. Current fiber optic technology can provide two-way transmission speeds of up to 100 megabits per second. While cable modem and DSL providers struggle to squeeze increments of higher bandwidth from outdated technologies, rapid improvements in fiber optic systems are constantly increasing available bandwidth without any changes to fiber optic cabling. That’s why fiber networks are said to be “future proof.” Fiber systems enjoy the additional benefit of being a “green” technology with low impact on the environment.
MORE ABOUT THE FTTH COUNCIL
Now in its tenth year, the Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council of North America is a non-profit organization established to help its volunteer members with planning, marketing, implementing, and managing FTTH solutions. Council membership includes municipalities, utilities, developers, and traditional and non-traditional service providers that deliver video, internet and/or voice services over high-bandwidth, next-generation, direct fiber optic connections – as well as those involved in planning, building, and servicing FTTH networks. The mission of the Council is to educate, promote, and accelerate fiber-to-the-home and the resulting quality of life enhancements. Its objectives are to supply a consistent and accurate view of FTTH, promote FTTH market development, and to be recognized by the industry as “the” fiber-to-the-home resource.
